Overview
Creosote is the reason chimney sweeping exists as a trade, and it is more interesting than it sounds. It is not one substance but a spectrum, and where a particular deposit sits on that spectrum determines whether your sweep is a routine hour of work or a specialist job requiring different equipment entirely.
What creosote actually is
When wood burns, it releases a mixture of gases, water vapour, tar and unburned particles. That mixture goes up the flue as smoke. As the smoke rises it cools, and as it cools the volatile compounds in it condense onto the flue wall the same way steam condenses on a cold window. That condensed residue is creosote, and it is flammable.
The single biggest factor governing how much of it forms is flue temperature. Hot smoke moving quickly up a warm flue carries its volatiles out of the chimney. Cool smoke moving slowly up a cold flue deposits them on the way. Everything else about creosote formation follows from that one relationship.
First degree: the easy one
First-degree creosote is a light, flaky, soot-like deposit with a high proportion of ash in it. It brushes off readily and comes away as dust. This is what forms when a chimney is running close to how it should: seasoned wood, adequate air supply, a flue that gets properly warm.
A routine annual sweep removes first-degree deposits without difficulty. If this is all we find, your fireplace is being operated well.
Second degree: the shift
Second-degree creosote is darker, drier and more granular, often described as looking like coffee grounds or small black flakes packed against the flue wall. It contains considerably more tar and less ash, and it does not brush away as easily. It usually needs rotary equipment rather than a simple brush.
Second-degree deposits mean the flue is running cooler than ideal, or that air supply to the fire is being restricted. Damping a fire down overnight is a very effective way of producing it. So is burning in an oversized flue that never reaches temperature, which is a common situation when a gas insert or wood stove has been fitted into a flue sized for an open fireplace.
Third degree: the serious one
Third-degree creosote is glazed. It is a hard, shiny, tar-like coating that has effectively fused to the flue wall, and it looks like the inside of the chimney has been painted with black lacquer. It is highly concentrated fuel and it is what carries a serious flue fire.
A standard brush will not touch it. Removing glazed creosote requires either chemical treatment to break down the deposit over a period of time, specialist rotary tooling, or in the worst cases relining the chimney because the deposit cannot be safely removed at all. This is why a chimney that has gone many years without service can cost considerably more to bring back than one serviced annually.
Glazed third-degree creosote does not appear overnight. It is the end point of years of cool, oxygen-starved burning in a flue that has not been swept, and it is entirely preventable with annual service.
What causes the cool, smoky burning that creates it
- Unseasoned or wet wood, which spends its energy boiling off moisture instead of producing heat
- Damping the fire down for a long slow burn, which starves it of oxygen
- An oversized flue that never reaches operating temperature
- An uninsulated flue running up an exterior wall, which sheds heat rapidly
- Short evening fires that are extinguished before the flue is properly warm
- Restricted air supply in a tightly sealed modern house
That fifth item is worth dwelling on locally. The Southern California burning pattern, short decorative fires on mild evenings, is close to the ideal recipe for creosote deposition per hour of use. It is genuinely counterintuitive: people who burn less can end up with worse deposits than people who burn a lot, because the people who burn a lot get their flues hot.
Burning better
If you want to slow creosote formation, the levers are straightforward. Burn properly seasoned hardwood with a moisture content around twenty percent, ideally split and stacked under cover for a year or more. Build fires that establish quickly and burn hot rather than smouldering. Resist the urge to damp right down for a long overnight burn. And make sure the fire has adequate combustion air, which in a well-sealed house may mean cracking a window.
None of which removes the need for the annual inspection. It just means what we find is likely to be first degree rather than third.

They have a limited role. The catalytic products can help dry and loosen second-degree deposits so a subsequent sweep is more effective, which is genuinely useful. What they do not do is remove creosote from the chimney, and they are no substitute for a sweep. Treat them as a mild adjunct, never as the service itself.
Texture is the tell. Dusty and flaky is first degree. Granular, like coffee grounds, is second. Hard, shiny and tar-like is third. You can get an indication just above the damper with a screwdriver, but only a full inspection tells you what the rest of the flue looks like, and deposits are frequently worse higher up where the flue is coolest.
